Answers: Plasma Membrane

Q6. Neurons are essential to the functioning of the brain and help to conduct electrical impulses from one part of the brain to another. Suggest how the piercing of the plasma membrane in a neuron could effect its functioning.
  • If the plasma membrane were to be pierced, this would disrupt the osmotic gradients present and would therefore potentially cause the cell contents to leak out or cause the cell to burst.
  • This results in the inability of the neurons to carry out their intended function as the electrical impulses would not be able to pass.
